How does power corrupt?

In Macbeth, power corrupted him a lot. For example, it influenced him to kill, to manipulate, to lie, and to not be true to himself or the other people around him. And even Lady Macbeth felt the guilt.
Power is a very strong ability to have. It makes you feel superior and better than the rest. And thats why it makes you do things that you wouldn't normally do. Because since you have it, you can do, and almost get away with whatever you want.
So in the end, having too much power isn't always the best thing to have. Because no matter how much of it you have, your actions that you perform will always come back and bite you in the bum.
For example, Lady Macbeth lost her mind in the end, because all of the guilt built up from helping murder the king and keeping it a secret. And Macbeth, gaining the throne from lying and killing, and losing it by getting beheaded.

  1. It is interesting that you say that once you have power you can get way with whatever you want. DO you really think Macbeth got away with everything? WHen you look deeper into the play what did he have to give up for what he gained. Ispower really worth that??? Waht do you think?

  2. I said you can ALMOST get away with everything. In Macbeth's case, with all his murders, he did indeed get away with it. But he gave up his humanity to gain what he wanted most in life, and that was having the throne. He was also being very selfish. He didn't think of the guilt and agony Lady Macbeth was facing having to hide his secret, and also with helping him get what he wanted.
No I don't think power is worth lying and cheating and hurting your loved ones. So if I had to choose between having all the power in the world and being miserable about it, or being totally at the bottom and being really happy, I would totally choose being at the bottom. Life is just way easier when it's drama free.

  3. I like how you have expanded and elaborated on the almost. If this were to be an essay, I would have you bring in specific examples(quotes/situations) on when you thought he gave up his humanity. HTis is however jsut a reflection. I like your thinking!!!
